Valve Check! Need assistance

    Hey yall! Doin my second valve check on my Xj700 today. Also doin a valve check on a 1980 Xs1100 and a 2001 Kawa Ninja. I'll post my findings on the XJ and XS and would really appreciate it if yall could correct me if Im wrong? I think i know how the whole valve pad mathmatics works. Pretty simple. But im always makin the tiniest mistakes lol.

    Wow lol, went to the doctor today and spent WAY too much time there before work. So I'll probably go tomorrow and do valves. Thanks for lookin yall! I'll keep ya informed

    had the flu and been workin double shifts but I bundled up with the gf and went out and brought the XJ home and did the valve check. Here are my girlfriends findings! (She wanted to learn so I showed her how to do Cyl 1) I=intake E=exhaust P=Pad
    Cyl 1
    I: .007 or .18mm P:265 Install 270
    E: .009 or .23mm P:245 Install 250
    Cyl 2
    I: .006 or .15mm P: 265 Valve is Good!
    E: .009 or .23mm P: 250 Install 255
    Cyl 3
    I: .005 or .13mm P: 270 Valve is Good!
    E: .009 or .23mm P:250 Install 255
    Cyl 4
    I: .004 or .1mm P:270 Install 265
    E: .008 or .2mm P: 245 Valve is Good!

    The math looks good but what concerns me is most of them are too loose. Normally they tighten up with use. It is possible a PO set them too loose though.

    I'd check them again making sure there is just a bit of drag on the feeler gauge. If you're fighting them in you'll get too large a reading.

    When checked (lets say) I used the .008 and it was way to big. Wouldnt fit. Next step down went it with a little drag. Step down after that was waaay too lose. So went with the middle.
    I personally felt that the gauges were going in too easy as well, and I doubled checked more than once. But, the gauges read what the gauges felt. So i'm just going on what they read out.

    Be mindful that the reading needs to be done with the Lobe of the Cam directly Opposite the Shim.
    The Valve is angled slightly.

    Sometimes people will read the Valve with the Lobe at 12 O'Clock, ... causing a slight error to what the actual clearance is.

    Indeed Rick! Common mistake I have seen people make. Any time my gf was unsure she asked me to spot while she turned. I'm very proud of her :)
