The manual said between .0006 to .0008 in or .16 mm to .20mm was ok for valve clearance .What if the clearance is .0003in or .076mm.

    #1 ex .0006 int .0003 or
    #2 ex .0007 int .0004
    #3 ex .0006 int .0005
    #4 ex .0006 int .0003
Its an 82 650j max . Im not sure on the j but it was a US bike not CDN.

You are a little tight on those intakes (#1 & 4), need to back them out a hair. Get the next size slimmer disk in there. Those tight clearances are letting a bit of your compression out too early. The factory manual shows 0.004-0.006" on the intake for the XJ650J. Otherwise, you are in good shape.

First off, we've got a few too many zeroes. Robert is right, but in addition to that:

#2 intake is tight, .004" is actually .1016mm but spec is .11mm minimum.

#1, #3 and #4 exhaust are tight, .006" is actually .152mm, and spec is .16mm minimum.

If you run at the tight side of the "American" specs you are actually too tight. This is another reason a pure-metric feeler gauge makes the whole process so much easier.

#2 exhaust and #3 intake are fine; the rest need to all go down a size. Gotta do it now as they're only going to get tighter.

Boy will you be surprised how much better this motor runs.

How many miles on this bike? Smells like a first-time or first time in a long time valve adjustment. Good job.

Second the improvement in running with the valve adjustment. Reckon mine hadn't been done in a long while by PO and was well worth it.
