Are the VIN stamped into the frame and the engine identification number supposed to be the same?

Well, I guess I have a replacement engine, or I am not looking at the right number.

the number is the short vin on the motor if it does not match the ending digits on the frame vin then you have a replacement motor. you can still run it through the vin decoder

Thanks. I just checked and it matches. if you had not responded I was going to mention that the engine number was a lot shorter than the frame number.

VIN numbers got longer in 1981. I believe the number of characters in the engine number carried on as before.

Not for Yamaha. They got a waiver. The only long VIN you'll find until '83 is on the headstock sticker, and it's just there for convenience.
My '82 Seca is titled with the short VIN.
You are correct about the short VIN still being used for the engine.
