    Guys,
Just picked up an 1982 XJ 750 Maxim, Previously had a 1986 Virago but had to sell it due to finaincial issues. wife allowed me to pick this up for $100 bucks everything is solid except the tank. bike sat for 10 years in a garage with fuel in it and needless to say the entire fuel system took a hit.

I am looking for a tank or if anyone knows of a tank that would fit the bike. without to much modifitaction. And possible petcock that would work as well.

Also I just rebult the carbs and the used a make shift tank to see if the bike would fire over after doing the standard maintenance on the fluids. And what do you know, the bike fired over the first time and sounds great just a little tuning, tires and tank and this baby is back on the road till the funding comes up for the real modifications to start.

    thanks for the help. :D

    Hey Sterling.............

Just an FYI, if you're on an incredibly tight budget/leash.........you can also use a tank from an xj 650 maxim, any year. Those two tanks are interchangeable, and MANY 650 owners will swap to the 750 tank for it's larger capacity and it's nicer 'line'. I don't know of any 750 owners who have swapped to a smaller tank, but that's really beside the point.

The point is, if you're on a real tight budget, there is an option for you......you can look for another 750 tank, or you can also look for a 650 tank as well.

Now, if you have a fuel sending unit in your tank, you'll have to disconnect the wire lead, as there is none in the 650 maxim tanks. That may cause your dash to blink as a low fuel warning, but if you know that in advance, you can live with it.

Once you have that figured out, please be advised that there are other safety things your should address before doing much riding--

    check rear brakes for delamination
    check front brakes system
    check valve shim clearances

    the usual stuff.

Glad you came to join us!

    Thanks!!!!

I was able to download the repair manual from someone in here and it has been a blessing to have.

I have the original tank but unsure if its worth having the tank resealed. And not to worried about the light I have already disconnected the sending unit and the light. Not a huge fan of them on bikes anyway.

So my plan was to take the tank and cut it at the seam and clean it up and the tig weld it back in place. But if you know of an easier way to clean and seal it I am all ears.

Also is there any other systems or anything mechanical I need to be aware of that are problems with the XJ750?

    Thanks again
