WANTED Starter for an '82 xj550

I am still looking for a starter for my '82 xj550 Maxim. I've tried doing the e-bay route and even bought one. It was from a '81 xj650, the seller told me it would bolt right in to mine. WRONG!!!!!!! Anyway, any of you guys out there happen to have ony laying around?

You weren't able to swap the end caps? How much did you give for the starter? Who was the giver of bad information? Questions, questions. I expected the starter to be similar, but I've no experience with 550's.

 

No Robert. They are not interchangable as the 650 has a Nippon Denso starter and the 550 has a Mitsuba.

This is a list of suitable starters that will require simple end cap changes.

Mitsuba 4 Brush Starter Motors - Honda VF500 83-86, VF700 83-86, VF750 83-86, VF1100 83-86, VT500 83-86, VT700 83-86, VT750 83-86, VT1100 83-86, CB650 SC 83-86, CB700 83-86. Kawasaki KZ440 83-86, KZ550 83-86, KZ700 83-86, KZ750 83-86, KZ1100 83-86, ZX600 Ninja 86-90, VN700 85-97, VN750 85-97. Suzuki Mitsuba 4 Brush Plate only on: GS750 80-83, GS850 80-83, GS1000 80-83, GS1100 80-83, GR650 83. Yamaha YX600 86-89, XJ550 81-83.

I wouldbe wary of purchasing a starter off ebay though. Could end up with something worse than you've got.

Thanks for the list, it will make my job alot easier.

The guy I bought it from said it was tested and working fine. He is a regular seller on ebay with quite a few positive feedbacks, so I don't think I will have a problem.

Robert, the mounts are different, the gear has the wrong number of teeth, and the cable comes out of the end cap where mine comes out of the body.

I'll let you know how things work out.

That list is from old bike barn website. Simple google search on "XJ550 starter brush" should bring it up as first result in the searches.

I have two starters, they both would need brushes and gaskets. I bought a refrubished one on buy it now on Ebay and I have had no problems with it. When I first got it, I thought it was wrong becuase the gear on the end was missing. Took one from one of the other starters and had no problems. My bike is a 82 XJ550J.

 

what about re-buildig the old one?
