someone with more electronical knowledge will probly chime in here - but i'm assuming your bike "thinks" it's in gear when it's not. does your neutral indicator light work?

in the meantime, can you start it on the centerstand with the kickstand up?

Must be the safety relay is either bad or switched out with one that is supposed to be on the other side. Pull the tank and look at the relays above the carbs and tell us what colored dots are on each relay.

You can use a jumper wire across a relay to make it work if the relay is bad. They are there for safety (new riders) and you don't really need them to ride the bike. Some just like to keep things stock.

True Painter unless you are like me and don't ever sit on the bike to warm it up. i have had it happen yet But in theory a guy could leave the bike in gear and forget about it hit the start button and oohhh boy!. Best to fix it properly if possible. Myself I always put the bike in Nuetral when i park it ( because i would forget) LOL!!
