Well, I think that explains the oil on the exhaust...

    The 550 had a drip on the front of the engine.

    Last night I decided it was warm enough to poke around in the garage, so I pulled the valve cover. The gasket was dried around the outer edges and starting to crack. The donuts are all squished to about half the size of the new ones.

    I have the new donuts and gasket, so I proceeded to wash everything. I've heard horror stories about removing and replacing the donuts, but I had no problems. Doing it in a pot of hot soapy water makes it fairly painless.

    Now, while I go the cover off, I should clearance the valves.

    Be sure to "glue" the gasket to the cover with the gasket sealer of your choice (I prefer high-tack decanted into a cup and applied with a brush) and liberally grease the underside with silicone grease or wipe it down with gear oil.

    Smear the rubber side of the new donuts with silicone grease or gear lube too.

    (I like gear oil because it smells like a proper garage.) Either works fine, you just want to lightly lube the gasket to help it conform to the head, and donuts so they can seat properly.

    Oh, and clean the gasket surface on the head with a lint-free rag soaked in lacquer thinner or brake cleaner first.
