Just wondering if anyone has any idea if/ or what gauge assemblies from other Yamahas are interchangeable with an 82 xj750. Not sure what
(if anything) I want to run on the project bike I am doing so I thought I would at least try to compile a list of options...any ideas??

p.s. I know I may have to make a few wiring changes.. I just don't want to have to rewire the entire harness :D

Not meaning to highjack but I for one would like a speedometer that is greater than 80MPH

Most metric bikes use the same ratio speedometer (Kawasaki, Suzuki, Honda or other Yamahas) so if your cable is the same size and will screw into the back of the speedometer, it should work. The acuracy depends on the size of the front wheel however.
I'm using a speedometer off of an older Honda CB350 on my 750 Seca and it's more accurate than the stock unit was. It works perfect. I don't run a tach (why) I've never reved it close to redline when I had the old tach on it, so I figure I don't need one now.

I was kinda of thinking something like the cluster off the 92-93 xj600 Secca II might work aesthetics-wise with the fairing I will be using.....

If I can trim out the center of the fairing just right , then mount this so it kind of pops up a little ( kinda like a car dash speedo..)

I also have a small windshield that goes on the fairing...

no sure though... don't know if I want to teach myself how to do fiberglass on this project TOO!! 8O

if you want to stay all stock (some people are like that) ebay up a euro model. They didn't suffer from the goofy US legislation of that era

I heard that! This one came with the 85mph unit, the "transplant" is from an XJ900; NOS off eBay. You don't even need to look for a "Euro-spec" unit, just anything outside of the '80-'82~'83 time period. The 85mph unit first appeared in the 1980 model bikes, and "lingered" into some '83s even though the requirement was gone by late '81. Some '83s had 85mph speedos, some didn't. The Federal REQUIREMENT only lasted from 9-1-1979 until 10-22-1981, but since parts had already been produced they hung around for a while.

I like the "clusters" because of the ease of access to the instuments themselves, which not only makes maintenance easier but allows for transplants such as this or other mods.

I've been considering using a 550 cluster like above on my 650 Seca, keeping the voltmeter and replacing the fuel gauge with a clock.

Mine wasn't. That was my point. The cluster in the pic HAD an 85mph speedo in it; it simply HAD to go.

Hey bigfitz, what are the overall dims of that unit? and how hard is it to replace the faces on the tach and speedo?? (can it even be done?)

If that is a XJ550 gauage cluster what is the speedometer from. THe XJ550 has the 60<PH limit. yours has 150mph

I've been looking at the gauges from a mid-eighties XJ700. I like the white faces.

I am getting the same stuff you have to duplicate what you have done. Any advice on the swap.

First off: When you "quote" somebody, take a sec and knock the "" links out of the quoted post, so the pictures don't keep re-posting.

The thing you need to know is that not ALL Yamaha mechanical speedometers are exactly the same. The "canned" instruments' frame has a slighly different angle to the rear of it and for the input bushing; and there are a couple different iterations of the odo reset mechanism on "cluster" instruments as well as other subtle differences in the manufacturing of the frame itself. Nothing insurmountable but it does sometimes require a little "Dremel action" if you know what I mean.

I did a photo write up back when I first did the retrofit; it's here: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=22823.html

Take note of the pic comparing the three different styles of instrument frames from the side view.

Basic cluster removal and teardown for the 550 Seca is here: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=14948/.html

Good luck. The biggest challenge is locating a suitable 'donor' instrument; I lucked out with the NOS XJ900 unit. You don't have to limit yourself to XJs, any "round-faced" Yamaha mechanical speedo that came from a bike with a "cluster" will probably fit. I had to give up the trip odo reset function to fit that one; it was worth it.

What I like the most is that now when I'm going down the road in 6th my speedo needle and tach needle are in approximately the same "positions" on their respective dials like on a proper instrument panel.

The Canadian version of the Maxim and I think the Seca had a speedo capable of 240 Km/hour. The location of the scales is reversed' putting the Mph on the inside, and the odometer is in kilometers. However it could possibly be a source. I have seen some in yards in the Toronto and Kitchener areas.

Oh, indeed. But all you have to do for an "American market" instrument is get outside the late 1980-1982 range for model origination. The Federal requirement ended in late '81, but even SOME '83 bikes (like the Seca 550) still came with the goofy 85mph units. I think my 150mph unit is actually from an '83 as well, just from a bike that came along long enough after the requirement had ended.

Great write-ups Fitz!!! very informative and clear/concise!!
just one more quick question...how do you get the needle off the tach and speedo so the faceplace can be removed and get customized??
thx! MB
