I have a 82 xj 650 maxim. The red one below.

The other is a 82 550 maxim. Why do the bikes look so different. Is there anything I can do to my bike to make it look like the black one. I am mainly interested in the seat and the handle bars. Are they stock or after market or off another bike.

    Please help.

I find my handle bars and seat very uncomfortable.

    Thanks

I'm sorry Triump but your question is rather confusing.
The 650 and 550 look different because they are different. The 650 shaft housing looks nothing like the 550 swingarm. In most appearances, they do resemble each other, kinda a father/son relationship. But the blocks used are not the same, nor is the running gear. It just follows that there will be the obvious differences in appearance. If you could perhaps provide some clearification and additional pictures to expand on what exactly you are looking for?...

Wow that was fast. I edited my orig post because I thought it was not clear. But I finished editing it, you already re-plyed.

I am mainly interested in the seat and handle bars.

here is a pic that I found that looks more like my bike but with dif handle bars. Are these bars after market?

    Thanks

Nope, those are stockers in the above photo. Your red Max is sporting a set of low rise aftermarkets. The seat is stock however. If you want a more pronounced seat pan similar to the 550's, you'll need to have a custom seat built on your pan. I had one made to provide a little more support for my lower back. Money well spent.

That is great info. I couldn't figure out why my bike just look alittle dif. If I get a set of 650 stock bars will the be the same as the one on the black bike. Also, where did you get your custom seat made? I maybe looking to invest a little money in that area as well.

    Thanks again

Are these handel bars like the ones on my bike or are they like the one on the black bike above?

They are like the black bike. Look stock to me but I'm sure you would want to pass on those, he mentioned they were tweeked.
As far as the seat goes, you should be able to take yours to any reputable upholstery shop and have them modify it. Should run just over $120.

Post your desire for stock bars in the sell/wanted/trade section. Putting the low bars on seems to be a popular modification. You'll probably find someone with stock bars that will trade you.

Beware, if whoever put those low bars on did it right you will also have to replace your cables and master cylinder.

Ok. Thanks for all your help.

Got a set of stockers at the bone yard for 20 bucks.

Bike feels much better. I always thought there was something wrong but could never put my finger on it.

Now the seat don't feel so uncomfortable either.

I also think the bike looks much better too. Smile

Again, thanks for all your help. I was disappointed in the bike when I first got it. It had lots of power but very uncomfortable.

    Triump

My dad and I met a fellow Maxim owner on this cruise, and he had the most comfortable seat in the world. Unfortunately the upolsterer died 2 weeks before we went to see him :(

Anyway, glad to see another local 650! I'll be gettin mine on the road soon, and sometime plan on heading down to 'Sauga/B-town area during the summer.

Also, in my area, theres a "vintage" bike show, with tons of bikes. It's usually end of July beginning of August.

Enjoy the stock bars, they are much better than the low bars. (better on the back too!)
