I was putting on new handle bars and the wires that come out of my clutch lever tore out. I can't figure out what they go to, since nothing I can find is effected.
My bike is a 1983 Yamaha XJ750 Maxim.

    Thank you,
    Chris.

Should be for the clutch safety switch. Did the wires pull out of the switch or did the whole switch pop out of the perch? Assuming the safety systems are all working: If the wires came out, you probably won't be able to start in gear at all. If the switch popped out too, then you can probably start in gear without pulling the clutch in. The latter is preferred as the switch just pops back in.

YUP thats your clutch safety switch is the switch still on the end of the wire?

if the switch is still there your bike thinks the clutch is pulled in meaning it will start in gear with clutch lever out.

if it is just 2 unconnected wires bike should only start in neutral which can be dicey when you stall at light or stop sign you will have to find neutral to start.

you can twist wires together which is the same as pulling in the clutch with a good switch bike will start in gear

should be fixed for safety reasons to prevent accidental tire rotation and to pass inspection if your inspector is strict

The plastic piece that hooks into the base is still there. The wires got pulled out of the plug. I practically totaled my bike putting on the handle bars. I broke this, pulled that, dented the tank, broke the tube that curves from the throttle, broke the bolt that clamps the mirror. Did so much damage it would cost half the bikes worth fixing it.
The bars where to wide and I couldn't quite get each thing to go far enough to put on. If I put one end on, the other end was just out of reach.

    Thank you for the information.

    Chris.
