Anybody want to chime in? Its the plastic box under that trim piece. It is held on by the same screw that holds on the plastic holder for the electronics back there.

It holds a security chain that came with the bike when new. They are cool to have, but aren't very good at keeping the bike secure since halfway decent bolt cutters will slice right through them. I have two, and they are both in boxes.
The lock hooks to the stud you see on the frame to hold the chain in the storage compartment.

You can see the chain in the storage box just below the sidecover of this Maxim

I don't think my chain has ever been outside of its little cave.

They used to work a little bit as a deterrent, now they get got first. The mindset was park your ride near nicer ones and hope folks would leave yours alone. Now they all get got.

I don't tend to leave mine anywhere where i need a lock for very long but when I do I put this lock through the back wheel and one of these on.

80% of motorcycle theft is opportunistic - meaning that someone see's a bike and finds they can push it somewhere, hid it and come back later to get it. Most people don't carry bolt cutters around and those running round in a van looking for something to steal are going to go for sports bikes or harley's IMHO.

I find the Grip Lock to be a better deterrent, and you can't forget about it and ride off. They give you a thank-you note and a tootsie roll with every purchase.

Agreed - I just like to have a chain and wrap it around a sign post or something so no-one can pick it up and put it in a van. At least not that easy.

I don't think that's likely but I just got in the habit from when it was a real concern with the various sports bikes I had in London. I used to hang around with some shady nutters too - no one that stole bikes, but the same kinda mindset where they're going to follow the path of least resistance. I know a guy in London that made a quick release for his shifter and would take it with him wherever he went.

Don't they make a Trunk Monkey Security device for bikes?

The should . . . and call it Saddle Bag Monkey.

That's.... kind of brilliant. Use one of those assemblies like the quick release for bicycle seats.

My Sportster was stolen. When it was stolen, it was chained with a huge steel chain to my (not running at the time) car, in our "secure" underground parking. Appeared that they smashed the lock with a big MF hammer, and I assume put it in a truck as it didn't even roll at the time. I had caved in the rear rim (though did surprisingly little damage elsewhere to the bike) when I lowsided it at 120 and slammed into a guard rail. Sadly, I'd pulled the insurance off it while it was "secured" as it'd be a while for me to heal and fix the bike, so it was a total loss :(

None of my Japanese bikes have been stolen, despite never being locked up or anything else of the sort. Not to say something silly like "don't lock up your bike or it'll be stolen" but rather that it's nice to just have a lower-value target.

Or at least a free XJ4ever sticker with a purchase over $XX. It would also be free advertising for you :)
