what is this tiny little chain behind the flywheel?

    it appears to be for the oil pump im guessing. my bike is an xj 750 midnight maxim 83. is this chain supposed to be really loose? i have about half an inch of play in it

    It sounds too loose to me. Can you replace it. The parts book shows #25 chain and 64L which I would think is links.

    It is the oil pump drive chain and I don't know how much slack is acceptable.

    Good question.

    Have a close look at the Pump and Drive Sprockets.

    A "Slack" condition in the Oil Pump Chain generally means that the Pump Assy Sprockets may be worn.

    There isn't much written about the Oil Pump other than: "If the Pump or Component Parts are damaged, ... replace the entire Assembly."

    The YamParts Site shows the Pump Sprocket as a separate Part.
    5G2-13355-00-00 SPROCKET, DRIVEN

    (( The condition of the Oil Pump is one of the "Indicators" to how well the Bike received periodic maintenance. Premature Oil Pump problems and Timing Chain related problems usually means the Bike went without regular Oil Changes. ))
