WHAT MODEL ARE XJ550 MAXIM CARBS?

    Hi everyone,

    Does anyone happen to know the exact model of carbs on a XJ550. I'm rebuilding these carbs and need to know what float height to set them to. I got a manual from one of the members on here and it says that BS32 & BS34 models should be set to 22.4+/-1mm and BS36 models are to be set 21.4mm +/-1mm

    However I'm not sure which model the XJ550 maxim has.

    I found this information in the manual--they are BS32 in case anyone ever needs this information. They need to be set to 22.4mm +/- 1 mm

    That is a "dry-set" STARTING MEASUREMENT. They need to be WET-SET, per the manual, to operate properly.

    Man, I am getting old, that one blew right past me.

    The XJ550 Maxim has Mikuni BS28 carbs. The float levels should be wet set as above, 2mm +/-1mm below float bowl/carb body join.

    Note on wet-setting float levels: RE-CHECK. Multiple times. Once you have a float wet-set; drain that bowl, re-fill and re-check. Multiple times. Floats have a habit of being somewhat inconsistent and multiple re-checks can head off being fooled by one "good" reading. Conversely, if you have a "bad" float level, re-check it a couple times before adjusting so you're not thrown off by one wonky reading. Also keep in mind when "bending" the tang on the float: if you know you bent it, you probably went too far. Think "nudge" rather than "bend" to minimize frustration.

    ok good to know thank you. I set them all to 22.4mm and I haven't noticed any problems as of yet. the bike runs very smooth and i'm not noticing any flooding. However during the cleaning I noticed I had to bend the tang quite a bit on carb 1 and 4 (one was at a 20.4mm position).

    Monitor your engine oil level; check before every ride. If you suddenly discover an increase in oil level, open the oil filler, stick your nose in and see if you get an overwhelming gasoline smell. In either case (strong smell of gas in sump, suddenly too much oil) DO NOT run the motor until you change the oil. "Flooding" isn't always obvious...
