This is the panel on an XJ900 which shows Neutral/high beam and oil pressure - the two small holes are for the clock.

What have I won - or have I proved I am an idiot!!??

    This is a 600 - which doesn't have a clock.

When I did away with my gauges, I had to make a plate for the turn signal, high beam, neutral and oil indicators. So this would have been handy at the time.

Strange way to advertise a panel for indication lights that's for sure.
I thought it seemed funny that someone would try and sell something by kind of insulting the potential buyer first.

ie. i have this for sale but only an idiot would buy it.

Surely you'd be more inclined to buy something if it was named,
    YAMAHA-31A-8357X-00-XJ900-COOL-LIGHT-PANEL-NOS-
    but maybe that's just me.

    You misunderstood.

Here in "The Colonies" the term "Idiot Light" applies to any IP indicator lamp that takes the place of a proper gauge; although it usually applies to cars.

A good example is the "TEMP" light or an illuminated icon of a thermometer instead of an actual temperature gauge, or an "oil" light instead of an oil pressure gauge.

It wasn't an insult; it's just good old 'Amurrican' slang. Somewhat mis-used in this instance, I'll admit. Turn indicator and high-beam indicator lamps don't qualify.

I'll apologize for the other 300 million of us.

    Again, I apologize.

Although I'm sure you have similar colorful indigenous slang for some things as well.

And I should point out that there is a difference between an "idiot light" and a "Hoosier Idiot light" ("Hoosier" being a term for a native of Indiana, and more specifically rural Indiana) which is a completely different thing. Which you wouldn't believe if I explained it.

The USA is a very diverse place, dialect and slang wise.

LOL at this thread. Maybe those down under call it a "whacker light" or a "dill light".

I call them dash lights... maybe there is a translation issue...
I do remember my father saying "Dash!" if something was amiss, then again he also said "Bleeding Hell!" and "Shivers!" to explain certain undesirable events.
There was the favourite form of stating something was broken... 'It's US!' he would say... "Un-Serviceable" of course :)

    But I digress...

I've always called them idiot lights as well but there are regional variations from state to state. From Qld to WA is quite a distance might surprise you yanks just how large this country is.
4306kms between cds1984 and me, does allow for regional differences.
But cds, if your ever in the neighbourhood call in for a beer mate.
    No Swan lager though.

Hehe haven't seen that one around lately, not that I'm a beer expert or anything.

Must have been just me... but I do remember 'Idiot box' being used a lot when i was a kid though... 'Stop staring at that idiot box!'

mmm beer... shouldn't be thinking about such things before lunchtime midweek!
