I'm turning my 82 maxim into a bobber. What fender do your all recommend for the rear? Do you ever use the stock fender? And where do you recommend I buy one? Thanks

Resist the temptation of re-purposing the little "under-fender" stubby thing and buy -
A trailer fender from a trailer shop
A chrome cover from a junkyard van, for the spare. It's actually stainless and will never rust.
An "e-bay" find from a used "cruiser", then, section it the "hard" way, removing 1 1/2 inch to help it match the rear tire's width.
Improvise an LED tail light, Frenched-into a blended fixture.

An angle grinder and the thinnest metal-cutting disc, lay a straight line with masking tape, use a very steady hand.

member "thejewishguy" is selling a bobbed fender from an "X" right now, go look !!

I bought this fender from TC Bros Chopper for about $40.00 i think..
I trimmed out about 5" or so ...
i tried the trailer fender but it didnt have the right curvature so i took it back ..

You can see where i drilled it for support

I put and extra steel angle for more support because i suck at welding

I also made my own forward controls.. they look like others on the forum.. but these i made with material i bought at Home Depot

I have a solo seat i can sell to you cheap.. the one that is on the bike is for sale because i bought a bigger one since i am a big guy at 270 lbs and 6'2"

I also have the seat springs brand new that i did not use on this build.

just check out my build so you can see what i have done and i used a vintage coffee cannister for an oil tank to hide the electronics... its pretty cool

Move slower and let the steel pool. Your welds tell me that you were looking at the arc and not the weld pool. Your wire feed speed may have been too slow as well.
    More practice = more better.

are you really going to put a seat on that fender? are those two bolts and that weld supposed to hold something up?

Welding 2 different gauges of steel can be difficult, with the bracket you may have been better off to rely on the bolts, or plug weld

I got it figured out. .I'm using 3/4" round steel to secure the fender ..I just haven't had a chance to finish the bike yet. .I know what I'm doing.
