My transmission is popping out of second. I've been shopping around for a "new" (new to me) one and found quite a bit on Ebay. Just wanted to see if I needed to buy an actual 81 or will other years or other style bikes work. I've also read that the trans can be repaired if you flip the bike and work from the "access" plate under the case. But it was for a 1100CC (I think). Will this process also work with a 650? I really don't want to split the case.

'81-83 should be interchangeable. You do have to split the cases, sorry.

Just be aware that the 1980-"early" 1981 XJ650 model trannies have different 2nd, 3rd, and 5th wheel gears (a different size) from the later versions.

"Early" means engine case ID # prior to 114698 (1981 650 Maxim) and prior to 002134 (650 Midnight Maxim).

Unfortunately, I do not have enough information to tell you whether they properly "interchange" between the early and late style gears/cases.....
