What's the best rain gear? One that's waterproof!! Just jerkin' yer chain.
I have a two piece that I purchased at Walmart and it works quite well. The important thing to look for is good tight wrist bands and leg bands (around the ankles) to keep out the rain. The ones with Velcro around the legs and wrists work very well.
Try to get the suit on with your shoes on, so when you get caught in the rain while your riding, you can quickly put it on without removing your riding boots. Trying to put a rainsuit on in the rain, by having to take your boots off is a pain in the ass.

If you really want to go cheap, go to an Army surplus store and get an Army wet weather suit, as long as there are no big pin holes in it and you can sort out wrists/ankles, it would work fine while you save up some coin for a nice one. I'm cheap, what can I say, lol.

ps, they smell pretty bad though!

if I had to pick one set of riding gear and could only have that till the end of my days it would be Joe Rocket Alter Ego line. They're armored textile with a removable rain liner that REALLY works. The "ankle" zippers on the pants go all the way up the sides so you can put on over ANY boots. Come summer, pull out the liner and there is a big panel that zips away to reveal mesh without compromising armor factor.

that being said I still run around ghetto style with a cheap set of vinyl rain slickers over my normal riding gear.

5th gear wide open.....best gear for rain LOL.

As an ex tournament fisherman, we had raingear issues too. I wera a gore-tex made rain suit. It has the mesh liner which really helps. So dont forget about Bass Pro and Cabela's etc. when lookin around.

    Check out Frogg Toggs
    Frogg Toggs

Excellent stuff, and starts affordably. Even the high-end stuff isn't too bad at $80, and you can usually find it for less at shows, etc...

you can get them in nice hi-vis colors also, which adds some more safety when driving around in bad weather.

    Also vote Frogg Toggs.
Affordable, fairly compact, and kept me dry for a couple hundred miles now.
I'm sure there is something that breathes better out there, but you'll pay more for it.
