I think that it is possible to use a normal four terminal (blade) relay but you need a diode as well. In the meantime, you might well be able to bypass the relay. until you can replace it.

Exactly which XJ is it? There are differences in the wiring between different models.

The way to "bypass" the starting circuit cutoff relay is to simply unplug it. This is the quickest and easiest way to troubleshoot a "safet interlock" issue; with the cutoff relay unplugged, all of the safety stuff means nothing and the bike should be able to be started.

In that case, the diagrams in the Haynes manual, figures 6.25 to 6.27, and section 34.3, all in the Electrical System chapter are wrong.

34.3 states that the relay contacts are closed, 'on' when the relay is energised, and this is what the diagrams show.

The diagrams would be clearer if they followed the convention of showing all relay contacts in the unenergised position. That is, when there isn't electricity flowing through the relay coil. (The solenoid is just another relay, it just switches a large amount of amps)

I haven't checked the wiring diagrams at the back of the book, because I do not know which model it is and I've not time to go through every one.

Hey Dean, we do have these relays in stock, but of course we are in the USA, so you won't be able to get it "today"!

The relay schematics in both the Yamaha and Haynes can be both confusing and mis-labeled (especially in Haynes, since they try and jam all the various model schematics onto a few pages; the schematics are correct but the labels----what they are, and what their applications are ----are wrong in some instances).

A few points: Yes, Haynes is often misleading or downright wrong. This is not limited to the Yamaha book.

I have personally unplgged the safety cutoff relay on a 550 to diagnose an issue with the safety interlock circuits and it started; or I wouldn't have suggested it as a troubleshooting step.

And finally, the bike in question is a 550 which is not covered by the Haynes.

It is one OR the other, it is either a maxim OR seca.
