I'm trying to go for the cafe racer look and I'm thinking that wire rims would really be great. I don't think there would be any problem getting a wire rim for the front tire, but I'm not so sure about the rear. Has anybody ever seen a wire rim for the rear of an '82 XJ650?

    Thanks,
    Dean

Hey Dean I thought about this mod myself but decided to leave it alone.
You would have to find a bike that had a similar sized wheel, shaft drive and spokes... then you would likely have to find a way to mate the pumpkin to the swingarm from out bikes (or swap out the drive gear from your current wheel on to the spoked wheel hub).

I guess the most likely fit would be another yamaha, but unfortunately I don't know what yamaha's would have had a shaft drive and spokes.

If you have the ability try grabbing a couple of hubs of shaft drive bikes with spokes and seeing if the gear from your wheel will mount up inside of it, or if it will fit snugly into the pumpkin...

Sorry I can't be much help, but didn't want to leave your post unanswered. 8)

Watch eBay for spoked Virago wheels. The front should be an easy swap but the rear will likely present some fitment issues. Pretty sure it can be done but it might require a little ingenuity. It's on my list of things to try.

Oh yeah... They won't be cheep, either. Figure on about $200-300 for the pair if they're in decent shape. That'd be the main reason it's still on my list of things to try.

Check out part #s at Bikebandit. The rear differentials look very similar, but you need to check them out to know if they are a direct swap.

I know for a fact that a Virago rear wheel does not fit on a MaxX swingarm. Of course, it was January when I tried so I didn't exactly take my time checking everything out as I was working in an unheated garage. Maybe it's time to have another look and see if I can figure out what needs to be done.

Thanks for all the advise. Those rims do get expensive, don't they?! It looks like alot of the Virago's that have spoke rims only had them up front anyway. I guess it really boils down to just how much do I want to pay for wire rims? I'll keep thinking about that while I look.

    Thanks, All!
