I've got an 81 xj650 Maxim that was popping out of 2nd gear so I flipped the bike and pulled the pan to inspect it. While I had it flipped I decided to mess with it. I pulled the 5th gear out and tried to do a full inspection on everything. I pulled the shift forks and pretty much checked the drivetrain while I was in there. Everything checked out so I put it all back together, while putting it back together I found the shift detent spring was broken. All that work for a darn $5 spring that takes 20 minutes to change!!! Well once I got it all back together I put it on the center stand and fired it up (with fingers crossed). Everything went well, no funny metal on metal noises. I started shifting it through the gears (running) but once I tried to go into 4th it seems to be in neutral and shift pedal seems to be "held back", like if one of the shift forks is stuck. Is there anyway I could have put the shift forks on wrong or in the wrong position. I'm about ready to take a crow bar to this engine!!!

I'm out on a limb here but did you recover ALL the bits from the broken spring? Maybe there is a piece of the spring jamming something in the cluster?

The shift forks are not interchangeable, if you have one out of place it won't shift. They look similar but are slightly different. Take a close look at the shift drum to see if there is anything out of place and see if you can find the remains of the spring.

The spring was in one piece it just had on of the ends hanging off of it. It fell apart after messed with it, but it was noticeably broken and in one piece.

Next thing to do is put the bike on the centerstand and remove the shift cover. With the engine not running try to shift throught the gears. Watch the shift drum while shifting and see if anything is out of place. You will have to roll the rear wheel a little between gears to make the next shift. If you cant see anything binding then you probably have a fork out of place. I don't know if the 650s have a oil pan, if it does then remove it and try shifting again and have a look.
