Upon the suggestion for the ease of tracking progress on my bike I have created this thread.

Step One: Purchase Haynes manual AND Factory Service manual.

    Complete and awaiting delivery!

I'm having some mailing issues, but I have received my factory service manual! I dove right in beginning with brake inspection and carburetor timing. On the back of the manual it say to get parts from Yamaha-motors.com/parts or some such, but NONE of the parts I looked up are available! I was looking here on the XJ website and found some that I need, but I just don't see spending 80+ dollars for a gas cap! (Wow!) any suggestions would be nice- sorry to step on your toes XJbikes, but I'm on a budget.

E-bay. Wear parts should be bought new; everything else can be bought used if you are not doing a full restoration for show.

Welcome to the world of classic bikes. Ours actualy have a greater parts avaliability (between OEM and aftermarket suppliers) than most machines of a simmilar age. (BTW the gas cap price is less than what Yamaha charged for a new one when they had them in stock)

Thanks k-moe. I'm going for full restore btw, I just didn't realize the cost. Still doing it! I'll keep you updated :) here's a pic of the exhaust I just took off... Couldn't even get my center stand down with the darn u bolts in the way. Another update: I got my Haynes manual in!! Should be moving right along now.
