This bike has been standing still in 4 years, but to my surprise it started right up without any tinkering. Even the battery was A-OK!

BUT I got the carbs floats somewhat right on the bench and now starting to second guess my levels. When the carbs where mounted on the bike and the bike was on the side stand it leaked gas from carb nr.1 (the one closest to the ground in this situation).
So I'm guessing the float height is just a smidge to high after all?

More likely the floats are a tad "balky." Put the bike through a couple of heat cycles and re-check your levels.

He said it's peeing gas. That needs to be dealt with. Most of our bikes sat for a lot more than 4 years; and when properly resurrected and then set up, don't pee gas. Even on the sidestand.

...and after 4 years of just standing still, you should check the brakes....both front and back, replace the fluid, too. Replace the fork oil, rear gear oil, engine oil,......................headlight oil............any fluid should be drained and replaced. Your tires should be swapped out........they're probably dry-rotted by now, if not, they are probably still on the other side of 'safe' by now.

I understand the 'if it ain't broke, don't mess with it' view, but I'd recommend that you take a slightly different approach........

If it ain't broke, that's great--but check everything ANYWAY. It doesn't matter how fast a bike will go.....it matters how fast the bike will STOP. Your brakes and your tires are the only things between you and eternity.

Thanks bigfitz, I will let it run some more and then recheck the levels if the "leak" persist.

I know this forum gets a lot of people who are brand new to motorcycles and yes I know you have to repeat yourself over the same issues, but would you all please don't repeat the same shit over and over unless someone asks for it.

Might not be float levels; sounds like float needle/seat and bowl gasket. You can certainly check the level again, but it should leak into the air box, not out the bowl.

Also, you could be a bit more polite. They may be a bit over-cautious about safety issues here, but it is life and death stuff we're talking about, and it's hard to fault people for wanting to ere on the side of maybe saving someone's life.

    Chill.

Sorry if i sounded impolite, but no, repeating information I don't want won't help me.
If i had asked "well it fires up what should i do know" then would have welcomed the answers greatly, but that wasn't the issue here.

And Yes, if I've had the airbox mounted it would have leaked in to the airbox, the bowls themselves does not leak.

The gas comes from the little brass inlet, Guess it's the main airjet when looking at this image http://sweb.cz/xj550/Mikuni_BS28b.jpg

The petcock is of the tables, or rather on a table, since the tank wasn't used for this test start. And if I tilt the bike upright so the carb rack is leveled then the dripping stops.

WOW! Nice reply, yes I saw your second post and it was impolite.
Good luck with the bike, hope no one else offers you any useless repetitive info.

Nice sounding seca broberg. Very nice that it was still willing to rumble to life-I'm betting you get good gas and quality batteries in Sweden. The spec for the levels are very close on the 550's to the rim, might be a tad high or your float might be a bit cranky from sitting for so long, it's sluggish to float properly.

    What's the red auto?

Thank you MercuryMan, Don't know if the gas is better, our regular 95 octane (Obs! octane number is RON) has a 5% ethanol mixture, and soon to be 10%.

Hopefully you are right about the sluggishness, got grey hairs from setting the levels to what they are right now. :p

Nice ride! 5% is not so bad. 10% sucks. I avoid it all costs, lucky for me the Shell 3km from my house has 91 ethanol free.

A 'treatment' cleanse with 'heat' or pure methanol in your gas (about 2oz per L) will pick up any hydrates in your gas and in your bowls-might clear it up if that's all it is.

Due to environmental regulations it looks like we won't have any non ethanol gasoline product available at the regular gas stations.. even our V-Power 99 octane (94 AKI) has a small amount of ethanol in it.
