So I picked up a 1981 xj 650 h for a project I planned on turning into a cafe racer. After getting into the engine I noticed there was some surface rust on some components but as I was about to start honing the cylinder walls i noticed some gouges on one of them.

My question, If I hone it a bit will it still be run-able. Or is it shot in this condition and need to be bored to the next .25 spec. Keep in mind I'm a broke as sh!t college student paying hospital bills, so my budget is tiny to say the least...

    Thanks John

Hi John, honing will not help, take the block to a machine shop, they can measure the depth of the grooves, they look to deep to rebore. Maybe you can find a cheap, low mileage block.

Search ebay for some jugs and switch them out along with some new rings.

They're nasty :( they look at *least* half a mil deep from the pic (so would need minimum 1mm rebore & may still not go)

I'd look for a set of barrels/jugs as suggested. I'm wondering how it happened, broken rings? looks off axis to be a loose pin...

I have no idea how it had happened. The rings are fine the pins are fine i cant seem to find anything wrong. this is cylinder three, cylinder two was the one I imagined having problems with since it was rusted up seizing the engine, but it cleaned up fine. Damn...

My WAG: some PO replaced the rings after experiencing a ring failure on that cylinder (cause of the gouging) and figured that he'd just live with the oil consumption for the time being.

WAG #2: A PO who was "good with bikes" attempted to "drill out" the crankshaft by way of the spark plug hole.

Actually, my money is now on somebody was changing a shim without the proper tools and "lost" the end of their wire they were holding a valve with... several times... and figured "what the heck it's only copper, it'll just squash out the way"
