So i'm in the process of cleaning up my XJ 650, it hasn't been running at all / properly and most likely is a carb issue, but my brother and I started at the beginning and are working on the valve clearances.

For cylinder 1-4 exhaust, they all measured roughly the same, at .203mm.

    Cylinder 1 intake : .152mm
    Cylinder 2 intake: .127mm
    Cylinder 3 intake: .127mm
    Cylinder 4 intake: .076mm

So i'm assuming we need to make adjustments on cylinder 1 intake, and cylinder 4 intake to match 2 and 3?

Now the question is, how do you remove the shim? Is there a special tool we need to buy to make the adjustments and pop the shim out, and then purchase another?

There is a special tool. Part #HPC247 @ XJ4ever at the top of the page. $15.00. Some guys find it a little tricky to use, but once you get the hang of it, it works like a charm. One member posted just today that he had to modify his a bit to get it to work, but I think this is an exception.
There is another method also, but I have no experience with that. Get the tool.

    Exhaust 1-4 are ok

    Intake 1-3 are ok

Intake on 4 needs to go down one shim size.
