Hello all, I recently bought two 1982 xj 750 maxims for very cheap, one of them is a parts bike now and the other doesn't run good at all. I'm 19 and have very little technical knowledge about these bikes but I kind of understand how they work after doing some research but the problems I have seem like they can be easy fixes. the first problem is that the bike wont stay running, kind of like its flooding its self so I think it just need to clean the carbs since they over flow and go through the drain tube onto the ground. Its also running very rich as the spark plugs are completely blackened with carbon so they might need tuned and synced as well. but the major problem is that when its in first gear the rear wheel will not move at all, there is some play but it just doesn't budge. I don't know what this is since the bike doesn't run well enough that I can put it into gear in the first place but it did run long enough once and when I tried to put it into first it died before I even let the clutch off. Also when its in first I can push it when I have the clutch is engaged but it sounds like its rubbing hard where the clutch plates are. Do I need to rebuild the clutch or is there mor to this problem?

Was the side stand down when you put it in gear? There's a safety interlock system so that the bike will shut off immediately if you put it in gear with the stand down...

You certainly won't be turning the engine by hand from rear wheel when it's at 1.st gear. Or 2.nd. You also can't really do a running start either with lover gears if with any, probably there's nothing wrong with gearbox. You can try to turn it with 19mm key from crankshaft end though.

Welcome to the forum , first go to the mome page click on xj4ever, read the information overload hour , chacal has most parts for these bikes . I would also recommend getting a manual, , you will find alot of posts on the forum . Sounds like the usual cause your carbs need rebuilt and cleaned , read the "church of clean" one thing to check look at the intake boots to see if they are cracked . A vacuum leak can cause issues with running. Good luck
