That is one cool idea! Looks like it threads into the oil drain hole however, not the servicing port. The temperature range looks low too. I guess one of us needs to buy it and test it out. Gonna have to wait a paycheck or two on this one, got other priorities right now.
    Mac, thanks for the tip!

    It says :

    Screw thread diameter:25mm,screw thread size:1.5mm,total length:37mm

That sounds like the filler. 140 = about 310*F
I think the XJ's would be running in the red also.

It kind of looks like it would go in the side pressure galley just under the crank no?

I initially thought the same as Robert. The probe portion of it looks like the magnet on a drain plug.

I think the knurled head and o-ring give it away as screwing into the filler port. I'd think it would be pretty hard to read while seated on the bike, and downright unsafe if riding.

I posted a pic of one like it a few years ago.

As far as not having a high enough range, in traffic, on my GS1100, without an oil cooler, I was hitting 290F oil temperature on a hot day. With an oil cooler, I am right at 210-220F, which I think is perfect. If nothing else, it would be a decent way to test the efficacy of any oil cooler you might install on your XJ. I am thinking you'd be most worried about oil temperature in stop and go traffic, which would give you lots of opportunity to check it at a red light. Hey, Maybe XJ4Ever might consider buying up a batch and reselling them, who knows?

    I have a concern.

From looking at the photos of the product in the original eBay ad, how does the temp probe TOUCH any oil if screwed into the filler hole?

Seems to me, if it's screwed into the filler hole, it's basically reading the air temp inside the clutch cover. The oil level is way down at the level of the sight glass, remember?

I don't think this one actually applies to XJs.

Ever start one with the plug removed? The clutch throws quite a bit of oil up there.

Yeah, ok. But enough to get an accurate temp reading? I dunno... seems it was probably intended that the thermocouple be submerged in oil. If we count on "flingage" for a reading, the best you're gonna get is somewhere between the actual oil temp and the air temp inside the case.

I think you guys are right, there is no way that thing will measure the temp of oil from the filler port. The sensor has to be immersed in the measured liquid in order to give reliable results. Splashed medium doesn't cut it.
