Can anyone tell me if there is a difference in the frame of an 81 XJ550 and a 82 XJ650 Maxim?

I just purchased a Vetter fairing and the mount that came with it is for a 80 CB550. I could use it with some modification but found a Vetter factory mount mount for the XJ550 on ebay. If that will fit my XJ650 I would just as soon go that route.

    Thanx

Not sure about any difference concerning the fairing mount, but I do know that the engine cases are different so therefore the engines won't swap out without modification. I would assume that the fairing would mount to the triple tree and upper forks. Those areas will be fairly similar except that the fork tubes may be a smaller diameter on the 550. Can't find anything on the XJCD that states the fork tube diameter. Maybe someone with a 550 will chime in and let us know.

Usually you have to get the exact Vetter frame mount to fit your particular model of bike and if it's not the exact one it won't fit. The 550 frame is different than the 650 so I would guess it won't fit. It may be close enough that it could be made to fit with some cutting, drilling and grinding but it's hard to say without actually trying it first.

Well I saddled up to my steel rack to find some stoke and have commenced to cut, grind, drill, miss and pone, curse, weld, and tossed..No, thrown tools across the yard. I have actually almost created a mount. As it started to rain on XJ parade the fairing was mounted in the right position although not as firmly as I want it to be. Another day and it should be done.

Blue Max. This is a fairing that acually mounts to the frame. I have a Vetter Rooster that attaches to the forks but it have a habit of causing instability with cross winds and here in SoDak this is a constent affair.

    Thanx guys
