XJ Starter Woes common with age , this 60k

    Grinding rachety noises as try to start bike? Like grabs and turns motor maybe once and then freewheels with a crunchy type of noise [you'll know] .
    Big troubles it is it is says the dude from starwars , not the starter motor it is'nt it is'nt but the starter clutch "inside" the motor , motor has to be removed and the crankcases split , no need to remove the heads or barrels and while your at it take a good look at the Pimary chain and Guide...

    Check too conrod shells , all needs to be looked at as since all apart why not?

    In pictures , looking underneath motor after split is primary chain going around the starter cluch drum , inside drum is rollers that need replacing available as a kit , see also the little steel post which is worn , is oiler for the chain , need replace if worn (by chain flap)... at the top is crankshart which chain also go around , primary chain also spin the alternater....HooNz

    Ouch! The slap caught the oiler? Wow, that thing was loose! Your lucky it didn't rip a bunch more apart. Starter clutch rebuild kit shouldn't be hard to find. I once put an '80 GPZ750 back online with three ball point pens. Pulled the springs off the pens and used one of the original springs to guestimate the length, cut the springs to size, slapped it all back together with Permatex. Never hear another problem from that bike. Wish our rides were as easy as that Kawi was. Definitely pull a main cap or two (you may end up pulling the crank anyway to loop a new chain if yours has stretched too much), helps to know what state of health your bearings are in.
