hey all looking for input here, still trying to get my xj1100 on the road, here is thestory to date.82 xj1100 with engine from a 79 xs1100 , minus the electrics, i have the pickups and alternator from the xj on the xs engine, basically only thing i don't have is the yics. anyways had the bike running, took for test drive, ran like crap, brought it back pulled the carbs, what a dissaster, ordered new kits for the carbs, cleaned, cleaned and cleaned some more on the carbs.bench synced, put back on bike did carb sync,.all seemed good, removede sync tool, started bike, no power and severe black smoke, come to find out not running all the time on cyls 1 and 4, suspect tci, but am also leaning towards main harness as well, anyone have any ideas on whattodo about the original yamaha harness connectors? i personally amconsidering making a new harness for the bike, maybe that will get rid of some of the gremlins..

Switch the plug leads over, see if the problem moves to 2 + 3.

actually did that , just pulled the tci apart, the pin going to the dead coil from the tci the actual pad on the circut board that the pin solders to was broken away from the trace, also the pins on the tci for the connectors have a white coating on them from corrosion, i suspect the rest of the harness is the same way, i guess i may have to make me a new harness.. but for now i think i will solder wires to the tci and install a nice set of deutch connectors that will solve this issue at the tci anyways..
