    Hello

I have finally wired my gas gauge and it reads funny.

I have the 4 bar gauge and it reads 1/2 3/4 full at all times and 1/4 when full
at about 1/2 tank the 1/4 bar goes out just leaving the other bars until empty.

History got the bike with no gauges and the harness cut up.
I wired the gas sending unit by the two wires and have the correct wires by color. I don't know if the sending unit is in upside down or my gauge is not working correctly.

    What do you think?

    Thanks

The sending unit is going flaky and causing false readings. You can take the cover off the sending unit and clean the wiper and wire coil, that helps sometimes. It will have to come out of the tank to fix, might look for another one that is good. Rust and fuel residue build up is the culprit.
I have sucessfully cleaned them but it takes time, time is free but parts cost money.
If you decide to remove it you can check it with a ohm meter. See if it gives consistant readings through its entire range. You will probably find the resisance readings will jump up and down when you move the float. There is a cover over the wiper and coil, bend the tabs to take the cover off. Use some 400 or 600 grit sand paper to clean the coil and wiper. Try again with the meter. Keep going until you get a smooth increase in the resistance readings. Finally hook it back to the wiring and try it and see how it responds to the fuel gauge.
