There's a CL posting local to me for a 1982 Yamaha XS1100 Maxim. (It's most certainly an XJ1100)It looks pretty clean in the pics. It has pods in place of the air box but it appears to be completely stock in all other aspects.

Any one know if the air box can be replaced with completely tearing it apart? For that matter are the air boxes to be found anywhere?

I'm not an XJ1100 expert by any means, but i think you can get an airbox in there fairly easily. The other XJ ariboxes can be removed/installed without removing the engine (it's a bit of a puzzle but can be done), and the XJ1100 airbox is shorter front-to-back than the othe XJ airboxes are.

    Good to hear!

I found 3 air boxes on ebay. I may call the guy back and make an offer. He's asking $1500.

I had actually decided to sell my Suzuki GS850L bagger to finance a CB900 I found, but I think the Xj1100 is a better fit for me. I want something just a bit beefier with a tad more highway power for longer trips than the Maxim 750. The Suzuki just never tripped my trigger the way the XJs do.

Adding pods will be a HUGE mistake! Plenty of info about that on here

The guy selling this bike said "These are done right. It runs just fine." I asked him how it acted at 85mph on the highway and he told me he hasn't had it over 55, but "It runs fine"! He then texted me with some crap about how you can make them work by taping up most of the surface to create a velocity stack effect.

    Yeah, they're "Done Right".;)

What I cant understand is why anyone would remove the air bax, install the problematic pods and do nothing else to the bike as far as customization. There is no reason for this at all. It did nothing to change the overall appearance or lines of the bike. It just induced performance problems with no aesthetic effect at all.

YES, Leave stock airbox in place, pods are difficult to make work right and you will spend money on jets regardless if it is in a kit form or not . Get it running in stock form and if done right you won't have to mess with the carbs, just enjoy riding :)

I called to make an offer on this bike and it was sold!

A day late and a dollar short again.
