    Hi all -

I need someone's able (?) Electrical assistance to ID 2 wires leading to & one coming up from under the engine on my xj550. Replaced oem wire harness but the leftover wires don't seem to have a mate.
    Bike starts, stops, runs good.
Horn, stop & taillights, signals all work fine.

See my post in Chat: Switch Testing - Ohms

There's a Photo of the 2 wires for ID purposes.
Yes, Schematic says one thing but the bike is saying another - in the pic.

If you have a clue or an idea about the wires or their possible effects
    pls let me know.

    thanx, td

One of them you already identified, for the oil level switch, does your motor maybe have that wire "amputated?" I can't tell from the pics what color the wire is on the male connector, suspect it MIGHT be for the sidestand switch? Neutral switch? Both are located in that general area...

There's the small black / red wire ( female end) from the harness to the Low Pressure switch - that male wire UP from the engine is missing.

Although the Schematic says White wires are for the ALT; there doesn't seem to be any receptacle or device for the White wire to plug into. Hmmm.

Will have to check if the White wire carries any current when engine is ON; after I get #4 carb running properly - it's flooding, hung up float valve.

I can pop the front sprocket cover on one of the Secas and tell you what color/which wire goes where/comes from where but it will have to wait until the weekend. Is it possible with all the other tomfoolery with the harness the alternator lead(s?) got snipped and you're running on the battery? The alternator wires are over there too...

    bigfitz -

I looked at the left engine side with Sprocket cover off. Near as I can tell; the White wire is coming out from near the pickup coil harness area on the Left underside. That is: it's coming from somewhere unfamiliar & it's origination point is Not easily visible or readily confirmed.

From the Pickup area it seems the White end is leading up passing under the engine LEFT Rear Corner covered by a thin black protective sleeve, from there it follows upward, passing beneath the battery box to its end point- just behind the Starter Relay.

So far I have not found any wires or ends cut off this 'new/used' eBay replacement harness.

Will have to do some voltage meter tests to determine if the ALT is charging the Battery and IF the White wire has current running when the engine is operating.

Do you have a Seca or a Maxim? Seca had gauges the Max didn't. In the book, all the white wires are related to the alternator. I'll crawl under a bike and take pics but won't have a chance til the weekend.

My Maxim has No gauges just "those lights".

Same here ... weekend wait; getting ready to move in 2 -3 weeks.

Have to take xj550's carbs apart Saturday, re-clean them and replace the fuel inlet valves as PO only did a 'curse-ury' cleaning job.

Electrical testing will be on back burner until I get bike running without #4 spilling fuel.

Bike's been operating for past 3 weeks with the mystery WHITE WIRE unconnected ... no ill effects - so far. Finding strange "extra" features / parts on this XJ550 Max
