I installed an XJ550 motor into an ATV last year. I noticed that really hard left turns will make the oil light blink. I was able to fix this by slightly over filling the oil... but it got me worried. I really want to add a oil preasure switch. Does anyone know if the outside area of the filter, inside the oil filter housing, is kept at full pressure? My idea being that I could drill/tap the housing or drill it and tig in a bung. I would then thread in a standard pressure switch.

    Thanks :D

The "oil light" is a float-type level sensor, and a slight overfill is usually required to keep it happy, even on a street bike; so that much is "normal."

If you really want to install an oil pressure gauge, there is a small plug-bolt on the right side of the head, toward the rear in the side of the uppermost bank of fins. I believe this is the camshaft oil gallery "drillway" and would probably be the best place to tap in an oil pressure gauge.

I don't believe the filter is "pressurized" per se; look in the factory book there are lubrication schematics.

    Thanks for the reply.

From looking at photos (i'm stuck at work) that spot on the right side of the head looks to be a blind plug? I'm not sure I want to go as far as drilling/tapping anything into the head without removing it. I did notice something else though.. there looks to be a screw-in cap with an o-ring just below the crank on the left side. I wonder if by chance its the same thread/pitch as an oil switch from another yamaha bike. I'll check it out tonight.

EDIT:I see now.. acording to yamaha its a self-tapping bolt? still sounds pretty scary 8O . Thanks for the info! i'll let you know.

NO, the one I'm referring to is already drilled and has a screw/plug with a brass washer.

That internal-hex plug on the left below the crank IS NOT INTENDED to come out; you could break it trying.
