I have been doing some reading here and noticed that cams and jetting are stated to be the only major motor changes between the 550 Maxim and Seca motor? Based off yamaha part numbers the cams aren't the same so that seems to be correct, but is this really the only major changes between the motors? I only ask because I'm looking for some simple upgrades to my XJ550 atv. I also noticed the redline on the Maxim is 9500 or so and the Seca is 10k. Valve springs look to be the same between them so does that mean the cam just doesn't rev out as well on the Maxim?

    Thanks.

Those are the only real differences between the two motors.

The Maxim was "retuned" to have more torque down low and therefore gave up some REVS at the top end.

For what you're doing with it, I'd think you'd want the Maxim motor.

You may want to jet rich and add tiny fans to cool the head.
You have no airflow in the dirt.

Thanks for the info! I'll leave it alone then.

I want to say i'm running 115 mains and 37.5 or 40 pilots...Pretty sure its 115/40. I have been shopping for some used rad fans on ebay to help with the heat. Maybe one above the motor and one in front.. not sure yet. It gets a little cranky after an hour or two.

I would get 2 small fans over the head, at the plug area, in the valley, then wrap the exhaust to keep the heat away from all the fins, then, add an oversize oil cooler. This should be enough to keep any of the air-cooled bikes of the '80's out of "the red". You could also add a temp gauge.
