Hi guys. I bought a 1982 XJ550 about three years ago. I rode it to and from work for about two years, then sold it because the frame was too small for me. I've since been riding a Vulcan 750 for about a year. It fits me better, but man I miss my Maxim... a great little bike. Anyways I'm looking at an XJ750 now. I'm guessing the frame would be a little bigger, and I saw that forward controls can be put on it. Anybody know if the 750 frame is indeed bigger than the 550, or is it just a bigger motor?

Go to Cycle Ergoand see if the 750 fits you. The 500 isn't on the site yet, but there is a link to request new models.

    The whole bike is bigger.

Here's the deal: The chain driven 550s are about a foot shorter, length-wise, than the shafties.

The 550 Maxim had its frame "cut down" toward the rear to contribute to a lower seat height than the 550 Seca, and as a result, it's a tad cramped for a taller rider. The 550 Seca is also for all intents and purposes a solo bike in spite of the "dual" seat.

The shaft driven bikes have a "middle gear" case that contributes to the added length. When I park a 550 Seca next to my 650 Seca it's obvious where the extra length came from.

That extra length, almost a foot, makes for quite a bit more room for the rider/passenger, even on the stepped-seat Maxims.

So yes, a 750 Max will be considerably roomier than a 550 Max. And also about 120lb heavier.

The way the seat on the 550 max is so sculpted, it really cramps you up towards the tank.

Although the 750 max's have a sculpted seat as well, it's not nearly as secure as well as the bike is much larger as Fitz already said.

As well as the bars have less pullback, opening up the riding position even more.

The 750 max is a great bike that's a blast to ride, you won't be disappointed.

    Glad to have ya back!

That's a funny application, but I always find that a 6'2" guy like me looks like a giant on ANY model! This said, I don't look too bad on a Kawa Concours, a Yamaha FJ1200 or FJR1300, a '75-'79 GOldwing or a '83 Seca900.

That's a good little application that, like it a lot. and quebecois, I'm 6'1" so not that much shorter, check how a Honda CB-1 (my little 400 NC27) would fit... I must look a sight on that thing, chin on the tank (well, yoke...)

Kinda confirms what I thought when I first sat on the XJ as well, the 900 type chassis felt very similar to my old CX500EC in weight & positioning.

Not sure how much real difference to a 750 frame there is but maybe if the o/p can find a 900 seca that would be better still?

EDIT-: Told you I was tall, look what happens when I try to get on a scooter...

Sorry I'm bored, overtired & that made me laugh out loud like the overgrown kid I am...

Hey! I'm 6'1 and I took my Maxim on a 4 day 1,000 mile trip, it looks to small for me, but is pretty comfortable. Highway pegs can be nice too.
