I bought a set of 29mm shims for my XJ from cheapcycleparts, no problems. Thats the best way to get them, in a kit with lots of sizes. I just wish the 29mm shims were as cheap as the 25mm ones.

how much did you pay for your set? i cant find a set... if you do a search for 25mm valve shims:

    http://www.cheapcycleparts.com/1-all-pr ... alve+shims

Its almost as if they are selling two shims for 30 bucks... HOWEVER in each description it says:
"For shim-adjusted Hondas and Yamahas with 25mm shims
    Includes two each of the following sizes and shim box: 2.30, 2.40, 2.50, 2.55, 2.60, 2.70, 2.80, 2.90, 3.00, 3.10
Replacement shims are available in packs of five"

So it would seem your getting two of each of those shims for 30 bucks... or are we only getting two of a specific size...

Why do these shims cost (or seem too cost) 15 bucks a piece... What if I need 4 "2.40" shims... but i wont know till i open it up...

This could cost me hundreds of dollars... :/ - very confused.

do you live in or near a major city? call the shops around and ask whoever is at the desk to ask the service department if they have a stash of 29mm chamfered shims.

I needed five shims and that's exactly what I did. guy said he would trade me straight across if I was donating sizes he didn't have very many of and would charge me $3 a pop to just buy them or trade in common sizes. I took the five I needed. Handed him and twenty and was glad of it. Measured them with a micrometer and they're good. That was on a monday even.

Interesting, yeh im gonna stop by some shops in the area today and see whats up.

I guess my confusion is that ive been thinking it would be best to have a FULL set of shims- so when i open the bike up I will see what it I need and just have it.

I guess what you guys are saying is - open it up, check the size I need, go get/find the shim(s) and take care of it from there?

found a shop today... guy offered to do the whole valve adjustment job for about 100 bucks...

I figure the cheapest set of shims I could find was 143... so this seemed like a good plan... probably better anyway since id rather not mess it up whilst needing it for my commute each day.
