Hey there everyone, I am looking at a complete engine gasket set for my xj650 maxim, but the cheapest I see is $115 on ebay. Anyone know of a cheaper set out there? Don't wan't to overpay or buy a low quality set either. Also, anyone know of a quick source of valve shims? Once I get her apart, I don't want to wait weeks for the shims I will most likely need. Thanks

PM chacal (Len) or email him at info@xj4ever.com <-- without the spaces

he'll hook you up. not sure of the gasket price, but aftermarket valve shims are about 8 bucks a piece new, and new oem shims are 17 bucks a pop.

otherwise, Dave - aka hogfiddles here on the forum runs a shim pool that is free minus a deposit and a 5.00 cost to cover shipping from his end. He can get the out real fast too so no need to worry about that taking a long time.

    good luck!

i got my engine gaskets off ebay, whole engine, valve cover, head gaskets, exhaust gaskets, clutch, alternator, crankcase ect covers, i mean everythinggg for 62 bucks. not knockin chacal, but when you're on a budget sometimes you gotta jump on that stuff. For valve shims, i have a local motorcycle salvage yard (kinda local, an hour away) I got 4 shims, headlight, tail light, all for 40 bucks. if you have a motorcycle type junkyard, give them a shot, you never know

ah hell you're down in virginia, the place is call baltimore cycle salvage. give them a call if you're willing to drive, not open on friday, sat, and sunday. the guy was super nice, he ripped apart 3 engines looking for the shims i needed. give him a call ahead of time with the sizes you need and maybe he can see what he can find before you drive up there. the place is a freakin treasure trove. Just be aware is pretty much just one guy in a warehouse full of crap and he's usually pretty damned busy.

Thanks you guys! I would definately check out the chacal prices and make my choice. I like the sound of that valve shim pool too! I will also check to see if there is a salvage yard near me and if not, will give that one in baltimore a try. It's a bit of a haul for me, but I could load the kids in the car and take a trip down if he has what I need. Thanks again, this forum rocks!
