    Hello everyone,
Joined a few days ago and its a great site but now I'll pick yer brains.
I want to separate the clocks ,warning lights and gauges knowing that somewhere in there is a microprocessor that monitors and controls everything (which will have to be remounted as well) will be using different clocks ( prefer the old style xj/xs) questions are
    1) can it be done ?
    2) if it can then how's it done ?
    3) is there anybody out there that's done it ?

Well thats for starters there will be more I promise :?

If you are going to replace the gauges you can throw away the microprocessor that monitors and controls everything. It doesn't really control anything, just gives you some warnings. My speedo and tach were broken on the 750 Seca when I got it and the console looked really bad from sitting out in the sun for years so I took it all off and put on the 160 MPH speedo and tack from an XS1100 that I got on ebay. Just about any set of gauges from a similar vintage Yamaha such as a 750 or 850 will work and should bolt right on. If you have an electric tach make sure you get a set with an electric tach, otherwise get mechanical. You can eliminate most of the wiring too. You only need to connect the instrument and warning lights but the connectors won't match up so you have to use the wiring diagram to find out which ones to connect together to get the warning lights to work. Also, you may have to recalibrate the new fuel gauge and the tach if the readings are too far off.

Oh, by the way, one thing to watch out for when replacing the speedo is the angle of the fitting on the bottom for the cable. Some come straight down while others come out at different angles. You have to get one that has an angel similar to yours so it will fit. Also, the XS1100 gauges come in either round for the Special or square for the Standard. The square ones have a fuel gauge while the round ones only have a light so choose accordingly.
