I have a XJ650 and I last rode it about 3 weeks ago. It has been sitting outside in the element and now it will not start. It will not turn over when trying to start it?

I am new to the motorcycle life so how does the instant start work and where do I put it?

By "will not turn over", do you mean it doesn't crank at all, or simply that it cranks but doesn't "catch"?

If it's not cranking, you certainly shouldn't be adding any Instant Start. You should be looking at the battery, side stand switch, fuses, igntion switch, starter solenoid, and such.

If it cranks but doesn't catch, you should first check whether you're getting spark and whether you can smell gas. If there's gas in the tank, but you don't seem to be getting fuel into the cylinders, you could try setting the petcock to Prime.

What shape is the battery in?

Get an old spark plug, attach one of the spark wires to it. Crank the starter.

If the old plug has a visible blue spark when cranking then your Ignition System is working. If No spark = start checking.

I have an XJ 750, it cranks but doesnt start, and kind of puff puff puffs instead of turning over.
I have the bike in Neutral, side stand up. The battery is new and I have had to recharge twice as I run it down trying to restart(10-15 tries).
Does the right handbrake have to be engaged, since the starter button is on that handle?(Actually the starter button is missing and a makeshift one was placed on dash(I use my left to press starter and right is on the throttle. I have tried PRI position to get it started and , just kind of stumped.
This bike was taken off someone after it sat for 2 years outside. I cleaned the carbs. put the stock airbox back on, clean gas. took petcock off noticed the screen is missing(was going to try a rebuild kit). I just think I am missing something really obvious. Did I flood it?(and I have changed the oil 2x, to make sure no gas is in the oil), there was before.

first thing to do is start your own thread that will avoid confusion
if battery voltage drops below 10 volts when cranking bike will not start.
ohm out your ignition system , How did you clean your carbs?

I took the carbs apart and cleaned.
there were two parts I did not take out of each card when was the fuel mixture valve and the other was the choke valve and cap everything else was cleaned with brushes design for cleaning the ports in the carb,w/ Mek.
another another strange thing happened when I tried to start it initially after I had everything cleaned was the fight turned over once and it raced like a banshee and I just turn the key to shut it down because I was afraid I was going to burn out the Pistons in the motor. I think it ran I think it ran that way the first time because I left the prime switch open too long and got gas into the oil so obviously I corrected that problem by draining all the oil and starting over but I have not been able to get it to turn over since all I get is poah pah pahffing from time to time. plenty of spark and the starter works..

I am thinking I'll look for that little relay underneath the tank that will I am thinking I'll look for that little relay underneath the tank that will disable the shut off switches to see if I can get it to run by bypassing the shut off switches at least I would know that I can get it to run and then I can troubleshoot the switches what do you think?

If you are getting gas in the oil when on prime your floats are either stuck; not set correctly or their needles are worn out and leaking.

If you didNOT replace the throttle shaft seals often times that is where a vacuum leak can come from = high RPM's.

You should first check your valve clearances and then go to Church.

After you do those two tasks report back and do as XJ550H said - Start a new thread!

    Will do.
I did get it to turn over briefly this afternoon, no racing, but then back to cranking and puff puff puffing. Now I have to recharge the battery again. At least I know I have a bike that will turn over, and run.
I don't know if this is the stock pipe or whether it still has the baffle material ,it's a little loud.
