    Howdy,

My XJ700X is missing the side stand relay and I am trying to figure out what to do. Is this some sort of standard relay which could be purchased just about anywhere, some sort of stock basic relay, or is it specific to the bike? According to BikeBandit.com, they have them for $66 plus shipping, but that seems an awful lot for a simple relay.

    Thanks in advance,

you really want one? i just yanked mine off. if i'm not mistakin though, the sidestand relay hits up a safety relay/diode something, that many sensors hit. it's the safety relay, stops you from starting unless all signals are clean

I understand what the relay does in that it prevents the engine from running under certain circumstances: essentially if the side stand is down. What happens if you don't have one? Is the bike perfectly happy?

Yes, it does "hit up" the diode which is mounted in the same place: above the rectifier and below the relay.
