I had bad throttle shaft seals. So I decided to replace all seals and did a complete carb rebuild. I got the rack back on and synced perfectly. The bike starts at the touch of the switch and idles perfect, no vacuum leaks. I rev it up and rpm's drops back down quickly. The problem is when I take off to accelerate, the rpm hangs making shifting rough. My question is, why does it start and idle fine with no hangs, but rpm's will hang while driving?

    Standard airbox or pods?

Have you done a running (vacuum) synch of the engine yet?

Something I’m having the same issue with. In my case I don’t think I had the bike warmed up completely prior to setting my idle.

I used a motion pro sync gauge. It is in perfect sync. I rev the engine up and it drop down to idle fine no hangs, and goes back to regular vacuum.
The only time it hang is when I drive it. This a first strange case for me.

New member question, maybe I can ask it here. I got the quads off for the 4th time, 85 xj700n, disassembled the rack, used impact screwdriver to remove rack screws! Have they got to be that tight to prevent changes when reinstalling carbs? I got high idle, also.

Hanging idle can sometimes indicate a running lean condition, maybe take a look at the plugs and see what they look like. Check some of the simpler things first. And yes, the rack screws are very tight, at least on mine.
