I pmd chacal to see if i can get replacements. do you think i screwd anything up ?
second what the heck is this looks like it went to fuel tank at one time but wasn't hooked up other than the long hose to intake area

That is the "california version" fuel tank vent and emission improvement device (name patented by me :)

Your gas cap is probably a non-vented version and the tank breathes through that canister thingy. UNLESS the tank and cap are from a non-calif bike.

I doubt you screwed anything up with the boots sliding off. He does (or did) have new airbox boots for the X and I don't think they are any different for the calif version.
They make a HUGE difference with getting the carbs on and hooked up.

HEY!>> Where is your air filter and snorkle? I assume you just took them off to work on the boots?

OK, I'm not an "X" expert by any stretch, but I can help a bit, thanks to a good online fiche.

That canister is your "evap" canister-- please don't shoot the messenger, but you've got a "California" bike there; different emmissions requirements. That thing isn't on the standard "X" I suspect one end should go to the fuel tank. California's emmissions standards at the time got really strict on evaporation; a LOT of vehicles came in 49-state and "Cali" models in those days, including cars.

We need a couple of the "X" experts to chime in here; unless you're a tree-hugger, I think you can eliminate that bugger. But you're gonna have to cap off whatever both of those lines attached to.

    Have a look through the fiche: http://www.yamahapartshouse.net/pages/O ... ibrand=YAM#

Oh, and the bike will run like crap if a couple of the airbox-carb boots fall off.

Can I also offer a bit of somewhat unrelated advice? Clean it up under there, and everywhere you work on. No offense, but yukkk.

See? What'd I say? Thank you, Mike. You type quicker than I do.

It sounds like eliminating the canister will mean a need to replace the gas cap or suffer "pluuged vent syndrome" brought on by not having a vent. Don't just rip it out, whatever you do.

Hey Bluemax, if you decide to just pull that out of there since it's not connected to anything anyway.....I'd be interested in that canister and the tubes and the strap that holds it in. PM me please.

    Thanks,

    Dave Fox

I'm thinking someone might have replaced the tank as it looks like the smaller hose that runs out of that canister went to the petcock, but is currently unhooked. I did take it out as i pushed the boots back into the air box for removal.

I see that it is a california part and nope im not a tree huger and elimination is in the agenda. the only part of the system that was hooked up was the large tube to the engine side of the carbs. yea its filthy and im going to get the whole thing cleaned up soon, I know its no excuse but i just got it and have been so busy. over the winter it should take on new form.

You can have it i will send you a pm once it is successfully deleted

I hope you guys are right and nothing else is wrong i will know soon as i locate some boots and get them put on you can see in the pic where it was just laying on top of the carbs then the fuel line and the little vent hose that goes to the second inboard carb from the left side of the bike. Once i got the boots out i seen there was no other option besides replacement they were in horrible shape 8O

I found the same thing when I got my X. Problem was, they replaced the tank... but moved over the non-vented cap.

Correct. There's a "rollover" valve at the rear base of the tank, although I've yet to see one in the wild. I believe there's a dimple in the non-california tank where the valve would go.

I pulled the hose from the #2 carb and capped the hose barb. No reason to have it on there if it isn't doing anything...

I also sent a pic of that connector to Harald Pfeiffer over at the Maxim-X site. He told me he'd never seen that before.

The hose from the #2 carb is supposed to go to the back of the petcock to provide the vacuum signal to turn it on.

You're thinking of the intake manifold. I'm talking about the carb body itself. Allow me to illustrate.

Yup that's just like mine I will pull that hose and the assembly off cap where it taps into the carb and be done with it :D

Got my parts lightning fast and got them installed this afternoon. wow what a job im sure i did it wrong but how are those suppose to go in? the two outside ones would go in threw the air box but the center two just couldn't get hold of them so i ended up pulling the carbs. Just have to drop the tank on and off for a test ride tomorrow to see how it runs
