    Hi guys
Quite a new member (1 previous post) seeking help for my ride.

I use my 1985 xj700x maxim x daily and it has always been a hit or miss affair as to weather or not it will start. When i press the starter, with about half choke applied and a little throttle, the bike always fires, and then the engine either catches and all is ok, or it fires and then just cuts out and all further attempts to start the engine fail.
With further engine cranking i just get an occassional cylinder fire, but this
    is few and far between.

If the bike doe's start and i turn it off after 20 seconds or so then try to restart it - no problem at all - it starts fine, and will continue all day to start with no problems. Its just the inital starting ONLY FROM COLD that i have problems. The bike, once started and warmed up runs perfectly
    with no issues.

If after a no start i remove the spark plugs, and crank the engine i can see a good strong spark at each plug, but the plugs all appear to be dry, even after several attempts to start the engine, which makes me think perhaps i may have a fuel problem on inital start up only (bike runs properly once started). I have color tuned the bike, balanced the carbs and have a new battery, have dyna coils and iridium ngk plugs fitted.
Somebody suggested perhaps the petcock may be at fault - but surely there would be fuel left in the float bowls from my previous ride ?
The choke actuator rod moves ok when operated by the choke lever.

Sorry for the long winded post, but looking for any help or advice.
    Thanks

    Sounds carb related to me.
    Cleaned em recently?
    Clunk test, enrichment circuit clean?
    In line fuel filter installed?
Gunked up carbs are the root of all evil O.O'

    Keep editing, lol sorry.
A petcock leak would overfill your bowls if your float needles werent seating properly. Thus flooding out a cyl or 3. Causing a hard or no start.
And a prob I had with my choke cable is when I push the lever all the way closed, the pins in the carb would be SLIIGHTLY lifted, not seating ALLLL the way and she wouldnt start due to too much choke.
Double check and make sure they are seating FULLY. Worth a look.
