I'm starting to rebuild my carb. When checking the condition of the diaphragms before tearing everything apart, I noticed that the cover plates are missing (which sit above the main & pilot air jets, retained by a single screw).

I am wondering if this is a big deal? Can the carb function properly without them? They just seem to cover the recess that the air jets sit in, allowing an opening on one side for air to flow in laterally.

If their absence does affect the the functioning of the carb I was thinking of constructing my own out of an aluminum sheet.

I am not sure why the previous owner would have omitted them on the previous rebuild.
