Hey guys I have an 83 maxim xj750 and when I bought it the kid who owned it before me had broken off all the exhaust studs. I figured I could just EZ-out them but once I got a chance to look closer he tried to drill them out with a handheld drill and now they have the studs in them AND all these crooked a$$ attempts at drilling them out. does anybody know a way to fix this? I was thinking drill press them out and either rethread them or heli coil them but that's gonna be difficult because they aren't straight in the head and I don't want the drill to pull off into one of his crooked attempts compromising the head.... so Im not sure if I should try to fix this one or if you guys know where I could buy one for a reasonable price? Shocked

I don't have much experience with this, and others may have better ideas, but you might contact a few machine shops and find one that does EDM - Electrical Discharge Machining IIRC. You would have to pull the motor and probably the head. Might just be cheaper to buy a head, but it's worth looking into.

You can pull the head with the motor in the frame.

The above advice is spot-on; the only way to fix it right is to take it to a machine shop that does EDM and they can easily remove the broken studs. The proper repair will be to then weld up the damage and re-tap the holes.

Or find another unmolested head (try to find one with cams.)
