Ok. So I just about have the '82 xj750 maxim ready to go (I think). My tank is almost done. Brakes are all new. Clutch works. All lights work.

When I have it on the stand it runs fine and can run through gears.

When I put it down on the ground, sat on it to run it in the alley, it wants to stall after the clutch is left out and it starts moving. Sounds like it is starving. Could this be that the carbs need to be YICS synched? Also, I am running a make shift tank (from a lawnmower) and the norm petcock is not hooked up, so that vacuum line is just hanging there. Could those be causing my issue?

    Thanks!

    Jason

I had the same problem with my 82 xj750. Once I synched the carbs and found the short to one of my coils it ran much better and yes the vacum line would need to be closed if not hooked up to the petcock.

Things you might want to check (not in any particular order)
    1. Make sure the bike is fireing on all cylinders
    2. Do a compression check
    3. Float adjustment using a clear tube
    4. sync the carbs

Thanks. Issue was that vacuum. I plugged it, took a while to start, had to use a little helper fluid. And was able to ride it!

I think I need to pull the carbs again and do the clear tube method. I had someone else rebuild them (owed me a favor). It runs fine but it seems like it is leaking gas into my enigine :( . So after doing some reading, my floats are probably not set up correctly. Probably also my starting issue as well. It takes forever to get gas to the engine. It has to fill all four up carbs!

I'll print the write up out tomorrow. I guess it is pretty easy.

Any recommendations on places to order tires? Local places are expensive. Dennis Kirk.com seems ok.

Everything else is just about ready for inspection. Just need this carb issue taken care of and my tank cleaner sealer (KREEM) came today.

    THANKS!

If that vacuum line that goes to the tank is not plugged your bike will not run right. In essence you have a major vacuum leak in that cylinder. Stick a golf tee in the line, or plug the nipple that comes out of the carb to engine boot the way the ones on the rest of the boots are and it should solve your problem (if thats your only problem that is :) )

edit - ok, I see you beat me too it :)

Off some old lawn mower I picked up long ago. I used this on a few cars as well.

I see now, I thought you were riding around on it with a lawn mower tank. That would be too funny. Thanks for the pic.

That is how I was riding it. Of course with the seat on also.

Going to clean and coat the tank this weekend. I got the KREEM kit.

Use caution, I tried the KREEM kit on my last tank. I had some deep rust pits down in the lower corners and it ate right thru.
