I've got an 83 XJ750 maxim K, I bought it about 7800 miles ago or back in October 2010, since then I've replaced the clutch plates, springs, and bolts with new ones(it was slipping when I bought it), front/rear brake pads, oil/filter changes regularly, replaced some of the common things that were soon likely to fail such as the solenoid, all bulbs etc.

Over all I'm pretty happy with the bike. But here's the issue I have. I just rebuilt the carbs yesterday, got it all back together, and now the bike has an incredible amount of power past 7K RPM, before it actually seemed pretty flat past 6k or so. But now I notice that at about 8K RPM, the 2nd gear will feel like it's skipping, in first or third I can get all the way to 12K with no problems or skipping. (not that I rev that high all the time).

I've read up on this forum that apparently these bikes had issues with the 2nd gear doing just this, and even some of the newer yamaha sportbikes still exhibit this problem. Is there any quick fix to this? It isn't THAT big of a deal, I can always just shift earlier when in 2nd, but it would be nice to fix. I don't have a garage or anything either, I do all my maintenance in an apartment parking lot so is it possible to replace the transmission with the bike on it's center stand in one day?

Last question, will only the XJ750 maxim gearset work? or will the Seca gears work as well? Or any other newer tranny gears? I wouldn't mind having a higher end gear ratio if that were possible.

    Thanks.

There is no "quick fix" IF it is truly a transmission problem.

To access the transmission, you have to remove the motor, invert it and split the cases. Not something you can do in a parking lot, sorry. Major surgery requiring a clean well-lit work area, etc.

Gears themselves don't generally "skip" I would get a second opinion on your diagnosis. Could still be clutch or even carburetion.

that's what mine does, only they start at 5K.
if it's not the shifter forks or the shift drum then it's the drive dogs and slots. the fix isn't for the faint of heart, or parking lots

    Polock,
Definitely not for the faint of heart yikes.
My back and every other joint hurts just thinking about trying to flip one of these things...
Pulling the motor out isn't 'that' hard! Surely...?

You can only do the "flip the whole bike over" trans surgery on the 1100s.

You have to split the cases on a 750, and for that, the motor's gotta come out.

Damn, sad news but oh well. And yea its not the clutch, if it was i dont think i could launch from a dead stop and use 100% throttle in first all the way to 12k, ive done this a few times to test just that, then tried it in 2nd and it always acts up under full throttle right around 7-8k. 3rd is also fine and doesnt slip.

I think this bike probably always had this issue, it just wasnt aparent to me until i got it running the way it was made to run.

Thanks for the replies though, ill still look more into it when ive got a few hours.
