    Hi Guys,

    I have a 1981 XJ750 with a recent starting problem.

When I hit the starter button nothing happens - most of the time. Occasionally it will crank one engine revolution and then stop. I have a full battery (13 volts - and I have tried 3 batteries that are all known to be good) and I can hear the relay click - it's a new factory relay that I got about 4 months ago.

I can hook a multimeter up to the positive side of the battery and run the negative wire to the bolt on the starter and I can see 12.5 volts. When I hit the starter button, that reading drops to almost zero, so I know I'm getting voltage to the starter.

I suspect there is something wrong with the starter - but I don't know how to test it.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    -steve

You could remove starter and take to autozone they can test it for you...or you could remove starter and jumper it ( hold onto starter it will move )

Test the starter by using a coin or screwdriver to jump the large posts on the starter solenoid (located next to the battery). If it spins then it's not the starter.
If it dosen't spin then it could be the starter solenoid.

Press the starter button. Does the solenoid click? If yes then the solenoid is at fault. If no then apply 12 volts to the plug (take note of polarity). If it consistently spins the starter then...

Check the starter button for corrosion. You may just have intermittant contact, which is why it only starts some of the time.

If the starter solenoid does not click after checking the starter button and confirming that 12 volts is present at the solenoid plug when pressed, then the starter solenoid is at fault.

If it's not any of those things, then order a starter rebuild kit from Chacal and get to work.

Thanks kmoe. I actually searched the site earlier today and found the starter article you referenced. I pulled the starter and it was a mess inside. I have a second xj750 so i pulled the starter off that and put it on this bike and it started like a champ. So i will be rebuilding the first starter as soon as i clean it up to see what needs to be done.

    Problem solved. Thanks!
