I'm replacing the fork oil seals and have started reassembly, but have a question about the new seal.

The seal I removed had a thin metal spacer (basically a washer) between the seal and the circlip. However, the new part is slightly thicker than the old, and leaves no space to fit the spacer before installing the circlip.

Yamaha shows that the original part was superseded by 4ES-23145-00-00, which is listed as 36*48*8/9.5mm; my best guess is that the original was an 8mm and the new part is 9.5mm and omits the spacer.

I've looked at the fork diagram on the Yamaha website, and only see the oil seal, circlip and dust seal; the spacer doesn't seem to be present.

Basically, I want to know if I can install the seal and circlip without the spacer, or if I actually ended up with the wrong part and need to go track down the correct one. Any thoughts?

If you still have the original seal, read the numbers on it.

Measure the thickness of the spacer. If it's 1.5mm thick, the old seal was an 8mm seal and the new one is a 9.5mm seal, then I'd say your best guess is indeed the right answer.

The only markings on the 'original' are "gci-72-51" which doesn't tell me much.

I guess I may have been misleading with the term 'spacer', because I don't know if that's all it is, or if there's a *reason* there was a washer between the old seal and the circlip.

The measurements all work out for fitting the new seal without the washer, but I'm just looking for reassurance that having the clip holding the seal directly without a washer in between will work.

I suppose that I can assemble them without the washer and if I get a leak, I know it was wrong :).
