    I vote XJ with a non-stock headlight.

The clutch cover was a large oval shape on the XS (one big cover instead of two).

    The wheels look XJ.

    But sometimes I'm wrong.

    edit: Shaft drive, XJ

An XS triple would be a 750.

An XS 650 is a very tasty bike. Lot's of aftermarket goodies and so forth.

An XS 650, while tasty, is a twin. The bike in the ad is, as already pointed out, an XJ.

    It's an XJ.
And the way to tell is the fact that the alternator, or generator, is mounted behind the cylinders and not on the end of the crank.
    XJ bikes forum? Come on.

    Quite simple , the xj650 is a 4 cylinder bike , the xs650 is a twin, the xs750 is a triple . Why the confusion ?
    cheers , Murray

This is an obvious 80/81 non-YICS XJ650 Maxim. As others said, the xs650 is a twin. This one has some modifications: visible are:

smaller headlight - zooming in makes it look light an HID with the power supply just below it where the fork badge usually is

    slash-cut mufflers and aftermarket exhaust

    non-original handlebars

    non-original seatcover with added strap

tank/side covers have been shaved of badges

The right side of the engine and eshaust looks good....I don't really like the left side...... I bet it hasn't had a shim check done. However, they say it 'has valve noise common to this model" , so its probably not TOO tight yet......YET........., but I'd check it anyway.

Maybe it's an XS850 triple with an extra exhaust header. :)

I remember I had an argument with someone who mislisted his XJ as an XS. I tried to make him understand the obvious differences between both models, (that I know very well because i own an XS), only thing he had to reply was it is written XS on his title...DEH, your title is wrong, man!

XJ650. If it were an XS750/850 with an extra cylinder, you'd be looking at the XS1100, and no one is going to confuse those things with a 650cc bike, even if you didn't know what you had.

Running on 3 with a bent valve or holed piston on the 4th pot, betcha anything. If the noise hadn't scared you off, you would have discovered it with a compression test. That's a 140-140-140-70 motor if that, too late for that XJ.

Nothing upsets a potential seller more than walking away because of the results of a compression test. I had one guy I thought was literally going to cry (a 400 twin pushing 125 on one side and ~66 on the other.)

yea he told me compression readings before i went there, he said this was also before he did the "valve adjustment" (which also his idea of a adjustment was moving shims around that are already in the motor lol!)

before adjustment readings were 120, 120, 125, 90, after the valve adjustment he doesn't know cause he didnt do it lol. yea i wasnt there for long, he started it and you couldn't even give it gas after running for 30 sec, he said "its to cold" i said no there are many things wrong with what you did when you did the maintenance, the carbs are way off, (he said he just did a bench sync.) and something is terribly wrong in that motor. if it wasn't a knock it was an extremely loud tick

the front rotor was completely shot and he said you can resurface it, i said no you dont do that on bikes. (but i told him to go ahead and try LOL) He sealed the valve cover with Yamabond along with the gasket, yet it was blue (never seen any blue yamabond pretty sure it was RTV) The exhaust was aftermarket something or another, and i told him the doner motor prob runs better :p i prob wasn't the nicest guy to him but i did let him know it was an XJ lol, also there was about 5 or 6 80's camaros there that were also in horrible shape, he said they were his dads so not taking care of stuff must run in the family :)

Yamaha did not make an xs 550 650 or 750 4 cyl xs 650 is a twin xs 750 triple and xv 550 vision is a twin. The xs11 was the only 4 cy.l I believe he mad a mistake in the ad but title was right
